Is Better English free?
Yes. Every exercise, grammar lesson, exam tip and vocabulary card is free to use. Signing in is optional and only adds progress tracking, streaks and XP.
Which exams does it cover?
All four main Cambridge English qualifications: B1 Preliminary (PET), B2 First (FCE), C1 Advanced (CAE) and C2 Proficiency (CPE).
How many exercises are there?
3,319 at the moment, spread across Use of English, Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking, plus 69 lessons and 2,179 vocabulary cards.
How is my writing marked?
Writing tasks are assessed by AI against the four official Cambridge subscales — Content, Communicative Achievement, Organisation and Language — with line-by-line corrections. It is guidance, not an official score.
Do I need a microphone for Speaking?
No. You can practise out loud with the on-screen timer. If you do allow microphone access, recordings stay in your browser and are never uploaded.
How does the level test work?
It samples real exam questions from B1 up to C2 and places you at the highest level where you answer at least 60% correctly. It takes about five minutes.
