As automation and artificial intelligence replace jobs, universal basic income (UBI) offers a solution to economic instability. By providing every citizen with a guaranteed income, we reduce poverty, empower people to pursue education or creative work, and simplify welfare systems. Trials in several countries have shown improvements in well-being and productivity.
UBI sounds idealistic, but it's economically unsustainable and discourages hard work. Funding it would require massive tax hikes or cuts to essential services. Rather than giving everyone money regardless of need, we should improve targeted welfare for the vulnerable. Work provides purpose, and UBI could undermine that.
