Social media has given ordinary people a voice and the ability to rally around causes without needing institutional support. Hashtags, petitions, and viral videos have led to real-world policy changes, protests, and corporate accountability. Online activism breaks geographic and social barriers, allowing anyone to engage in meaningful civic action from anywhere in the world.
While social media might raise awareness, it often results in superficial involvement—what some call 'slacktivism'. Liking or sharing a post is no substitute for sustained, real-world action. True change requires effort, organization, and sacrifice—none of which can be fully achieved through screens. The danger is that people believe they’ve contributed simply by clicking, when real activism requires far more.
