Democracy depends on participation. When citizens don’t vote, decisions are made by a narrow group that may not represent the broader population. Making voting mandatory, as in some countries, increases engagement and leads to more balanced results. If people are required to follow laws, they should also be required to help choose who makes them.
Voting is a right, not a duty. Forcing people to vote can lead to uninformed or random choices that harm democracy. Instead of mandating participation, we should address why people feel disconnected or disillusioned. The freedom not to vote is just as important as the freedom to vote—it reflects true democratic liberty.
