The Great Barrier Reef is the world’s largest living structure and is made up of more than 3800 individual reefs. Some marine biologists recently did a study searching the Great Barrier Reef for ideal areas that could 1POTENTIAL produce larvae and support the recovery of other damaged reefs. The study found 112 robust source reefs, which had ideal properties to facilitate 2RECOVER of others by spreading fertilised eggs to replenish other areas. While investigating, 3SEARCH had strict criteria. The reefs had to be 4CONSIST well connected to other reefs through the constantly shifting currents. They needed to be less likely to die in a coral bleaching event and be non susceptible to crown-of-thorn starfish 5BREAK. These reefs were more likely to still be 6RIGHT in the event of bleaching incidents. Furthermore, they were in the right location to send fertilised eggs to the reefs that need them during the annual 7PRODUCE. The marine biologists used ocean circulation simulations to model the 8CONNECT of the reef.
