A newly-employed sales assistant at a DIY store was (0) UNEXPECTEDLY sacked after failing a computerized test, despite having performed so well that he was offered a promotion. However, Mr Filer had been promoted before the results of the company’s psychometric test had come through. The ten-minute test presents 1APPLY with statements including things like ‘I prefer to have close relationships outside work rather than with fellow employees: and ‘My 2PRODUCE is higher than others I work with’. Unfortunately, after accepting the promotion, he received 3NOTIFY that his efforts in the psychometric test had been unsuccessful. Although his manager had given him 4ASSURE that there would not be a problem, he was 5RULE by the head office who insisted on Mr Filer’s dismissal. A company spokesperson insisted that their procedures were fair and ‘6SURE consistency and 7OBJECT, Mr Filer was eventually escorted off the premises by security guards’.
