AStage 1: NREM - Light Transition
Stage 1 sleep marks the threshold between wakefulness and sleep, a fleeting interlude characterized by a deceleration of brain activity and physiological processes. During this brief phase—typically lasting only a few minutes—alpha waves give way to theta rhythms, eye movements slow, and muscle tone begins to relax. Although consciousness begins to recede, individuals are still easily roused and may not even perceive themselves as having fallen asleep. Hypnic jerks—sudden muscle contractions accompanied by the sensation of falling—are common during this stage, thought to represent a primitive protective reflex. While often dismissed as trivial, this transitional window plays a critical role in initiating the descent into deeper stages of sleep by disengaging sensory awareness and cortical vigilance.
