Silk, the proteinaceous filament secreted by the larvae of Bombyx mori, has occupied an unrivalled position in the hierarchy of luxury textiles for over five millennia. Its production, or sericulture, originated in Neolithic China, where legend attributes its discovery to the Empress Leizu, who purportedly observed a cocoon unravelling in her tea. The fibre's extraordinary tensile strength—comparable, weight for weight, to that of steel—belies its gossamer delicacy, a paradox that has long fascinated materials scientists. Silk's characteristic luminous sheen arises from its triangular prismatic cross-section, which refracts incident light at multiple angles, producing a natural iridescence unachievable by any synthetic substitute. The Silk Road, that vast arterial network of overland and maritime trade routes linking East Asia to the Mediterranean littoral, derived its very appellation from this commodity, which for centuries functioned as a de facto currency in transcontinental exchange. In contemporary biomedicine, silk fibroin scaffolds are being investigated as substrates for tissue regeneration, owing to the material's exceptional biocompatibility and controllable biodegradation rates. The fabric remains, however, ethically contentious; conventional production necessitates the thermal destruction of the chrysalis prior to eclosion, prompting the emergence of 'peace silk' or 'Ahimsa silk' alternatives, wherein the moth is permitted to emerge before the cocoon is processed, albeit at a significant cost to filament continuity and tensile uniformity.
