ASynaesthesia
Synaesthesia, a heritable neurological condition affecting an estimated four percent of the population, entails the involuntary coupling of two or more sensory or cognitive pathways such that stimulation of one modality automatically and consistently elicits a concurrent percept in another. A grapheme–colour synaesthete, for instance, may unfailingly perceive the numeral seven as suffused with a particular shade of cerulean—not metaphorically, but as an irreducible feature of phenomenal experience. Functional neuroimaging studies have revealed atypical cross-activation between cortical regions that, in non-synaesthetic individuals, process discrete sensory channels, suggesting that the condition arises from a failure of the normal synaptic pruning that occurs during early neurodevelopment. Far from constituting a deficit, synaesthesia appears to confer certain mnemonic advantages; longitudinal studies indicate that synaesthetes consistently outperform matched controls on tests of episodic recall, presumably because each datum is encoded through multiple, mutually reinforcing perceptual tags. Artistic communities have historically exhibited a disproportionate prevalence of the trait, lending credence to the hypothesis that synaesthesia facilitates the generation of novel cross-modal metaphors, a capacity that underpins much creative production.
