The species Latimeria chalumnae possesses a suite of anatomical features of extraordinary evolutionary significance, most notably its lobed pectoral and pelvic fins, which articulate upon fleshy, limb-like stalks containing an internal skeletal architecture homologous to the appendicular elements of tetrapods—a morphological configuration that positions the coelacanth as a critical extant reference point for understanding the fin-to-limb transition that enabled vertebrate terrestrialisation during the Late Devonian. The animal inhabits deep submarine volcanic caves at depths typically exceeding two hundred metres along the Comoran archipelago and the eastern African littoral, a cryptic bathypelagic existence that explains its prolonged evasion of scientific detection.
