APulsars
Pulsars, the rapidly rotating magnetised remnants of massive stars that have undergone gravitational collapse, emit collimated beams of electromagnetic radiation from their magnetic poles—beams that, owing to the misalignment of the magnetic and rotational axes, sweep across the observer's line of sight with a metronomic periodicity so precise that their discoverers, Jocelyn Bell Burnell and Antony Hewish, initially designated the first detected signal LGM-1, an acronym for 'Little Green Men,' reflecting their half-serious suspicion that the source might be an extraterrestrial beacon. The rotational periods of known pulsars span an extraordinary range, from the leisurely multi-second cadence of ordinary pulsars to the vertiginous sub-millisecond spin rates of recycled pulsars that have been gravitationally spun up through accretion of matter from a binary companion star. This extraordinary temporal stability has rendered certain millisecond pulsars competitive with terrestrial atomic clocks as chronometric standards, and arrays of such objects are currently being employed in pulsar timing experiments designed to detect the low-frequency gravitational wave background pervading the cosmos. The gradual deceleration of a pulsar's rotation, quantified as the spin-down rate, provides a direct measure of the object's magnetic field strength and characteristic age, parameters that illuminate the evolutionary trajectory of these objects over astronomical timescales.
