AMercator
The Mercator projection, devised by the Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator in 1569, achieves its defining mathematical property—conformality, the preservation of local angular relationships—by progressively increasing the spacing of parallels of latitude as one moves poleward from the equator, a compensatory distortion that maintains the correct shape of small regions at the unavoidable cost of catastrophically inflating the apparent area of landmasses at high latitudes. The projection's navigational utility is unrivalled: because any straight line drawn upon a Mercator chart represents a rhumb line—a path of constant compass bearing—a mariner need only align a ruler between departure and destination to read off the requisite heading, a property that rendered the projection indispensable to the Age of Exploration and that continues to underpin modern nautical chartwork. The political critique of the Mercator projection, articulated with increasing vehemence from the 1970s onward, centres upon its dramatic visual exaggeration of the northern hemisphere at the expense of equatorial and southern landmasses; Greenland, for instance, appears comparable in size to the entirety of Africa, when in reality the latter exceeds the former by a factor of approximately fourteen. This distortion, critics argue, has insidiously reinforced Eurocentric geopolitical assumptions by visually aggrandising the colonial powers of the global north while diminishing the apparent extent of the colonised south, a cartographic bias that persists wherever the projection continues to serve as the default template for wall maps and digital mapping platforms.
