William James, in his 1890 'Principles of Psychology,' described habit as 'the enormous fly-wheel of society, its most precious conservative agent.' By this he meant that the vast majority of human behaviour is not the product of conscious deliberation but of ingrained routines — sequences of action so deeply practised that they unfold without awareness, freeing the mind for the comparatively rare occasions on which genuine decision is required.
The neuroscience of habit has largely vindicated James's intuition, though it has relocated the mechanism from the metaphorical to the anatomical. Research conducted primarily at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology has demonstrated that habitual behaviours are governed by the basal ganglia — a cluster of subcortical structures that operate largely independently of the prefrontal cortex, the brain region associated with conscious planning and deliberation.
The neurological signature of a well-established habit is, paradoxically, a reduction in brain activity: the behaviour has been 'chunked' into a single automated sequence that the basal ganglia can execute with minimal metabolic expenditure, much as a computer subroutine runs without engaging the main processor. The philosopher Maurice Merleau-Ponty offered a phenomenological account of habit that complements the neuroscientific one. For Merleau-Ponty, to acquire a habit is not to store a mental representation of a sequence of movements but to restructure one's bodily relationship to the world — to incorporate a tool, a technique, or a spatial environment into what he called the 'body schema.'
The experienced driver does not think about the pedals, the steering wheel, or the spatial dimensions of the car; these have been absorbed into the body schema so thoroughly that the car functions as an extension of the driver's own limbs, a prosthesis that has been incorporated into the pre-reflective structure of motor intentionality. The social dimensions of habit have received less philosophical attention but are arguably more consequential. Bourdieu's concept of 'habitus' — the system of durable, transposable dispositions that individuals acquire through socialisation and that generate practices 'without presupposing a conscious aiming at ends' — is, in essence, a theory of collective habit: the idea that entire social classes share patterns of perception, taste, and behaviour so deeply internalised that they function with the automaticity of individual habits.
The way a person holds a fork, modulates their voice, or arranges the furniture in their living room — each of these seemingly trivial choices is, on Bourdieu's analysis, the expression of a habitus acquired in childhood and reinforced through decades of class-specific socialisation. The question of whether habits can be deliberately changed has exercised psychologists, ethicists, and self-help authors in roughly equal measure, though with very different degrees of rigour. The behavioural psychologist B. F. Skinner treated habit change as a straightforward problem of reinforcement schedules: modify the contingencies and the behaviour will follow.
Aristotle, by contrast, had argued two millennia earlier that moral virtue itself was a habit — 'hexis' — acquired not through the manipulation of external contingencies but through the repeated performance of virtuous acts until they became second nature, a view that places habit at the very centre of ethical life rather than treating it as an obstacle to be overcome. Whether the contemporary 'habit-hacking' industry — the apps, the productivity systems, the morning routines of successful CEOs disseminated through podcasts and bestsellers — represents a genuine advance in the understanding of human behaviour or merely a repackaging of Skinnerian behaviourism in Silicon Valley idiom is a question worth posing.
What James understood, and what the habit-hacking industry largely ignores, is that the most consequential habits are not the ones we choose but the ones that choose us — the dispositions so deeply embedded in our bodies, our social environments, and our neural architectures that they constitute not merely what we do but, in a quite fundamental sense, who we are.
