The global refugee crisis has reached unprecedented proportions, with millions of people displaced (0) BY conflict, persecution, and environmental disaster. While much media attention has been devoted to 1 fleeing war zones in the Middle East and Africa, far less coverage has been given to the plight of climate refugees — individuals forced to leave 2 homes because of rising sea levels, prolonged droughts, and extreme weather events. 3 current international law, these individuals are not entitled to the same protections as those fleeing armed conflict, a situation 4 many legal scholars consider to be profoundly unjust. Neighbouring countries, 5 of which lack the resources to cope, bear a disproportionate share of the burden of accommodating displaced populations. Serious 6 this situation undoubtedly is, it has yet to receive the attention it deserves from world leaders. It is estimated that by the middle of this century, environmental displacement 7 have affected as many as two hundred million people. Only 8 this issue is given the priority it warrants can meaningful solutions begin to emerge.
