Originally a socialist journalist, Mussolini rose to power as the founder of Italian Fascism, promising order and national revival amidst post-World War I instability. Mussolini’s bombastic style and cult of personality inspired other authoritarian leaders, including Hitler, with whom he later allied during World War II. His downfall came as Allied forces invaded Italy and his own people turned against him.
