Initially developed as a painkiller for advanced cancer patients, fentanyl is a synthetic opioid estimated to be 50 times more potent than heroin. Extracted from the coca plant, cocaine is a stimulant that temporarily increases alertness and energy. However, its effects are short-lived, pushing users to redose frequently, which increases the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and seizures. It is often glamorized in popular culture, but its health impact and societal toll are severe. Crack cocaine, a cheaper, smokable version, has been especially associated with urban addiction and systemic poverty. Both forms can create a rapid downward spiral for users.

It is considered so toxic that exposure through skin contact or inhalation can be fatal. Illegally distributed on the streets, it is often disguised as heroin or mixed into counterfeit pills, making it particularly treacherous. Due to its extraordinary strength, emergency responders must exercise extreme caution when dealing with suspected carfentanil overdoses.
