AThe Birth of the Camera
Photography as we know it began in the early 19th century with the invention of the camera obscura. These rudimentary devices projected light through a small hole onto a surface, allowing early experimenters to trace the outlines of real-world images. The breakthrough came when chemicals were used to permanently fix these projections onto plates. Louis Daguerre’s invention of the daguerreotype in 1839 marked the first widely adopted photographic process. Though laborious and fragile, these images introduced the public to the idea of capturing life as it was.
