The Twist is a dance that was inspired by rock and roll music. From 1959 to the sixties it became the first worldwide dance craze, enjoying immense popularity among all people. At the same time, it drew from critics who felt it was too provocative. It is performed by with the feet approximately shoulder width apart. The arms are held out from the body, at the elbow. The hips, torso, and legs rotate on the balls of the feet as a single unit, and the feet grind back and on the floor. Occasionally one leg may be lifted off the floor, but generally the dance posture is low, with very vertical motion. The dancers scarcely ever touch each other or move their feet. Everything else, however, moves. The body sways forward and backward and the hips and shoulders twirl erotically. At the same time, the arms thrust in, out, up and down with the pistonlike motions of someone fighting off a of attacking birds. Cool, isn't it?
