Of all the human senses, smell is the one most frequently dismissed as primitive and unreliable. The Enlightenment philosopher Immanuel Kant ranked it the lowest of the senses, arguing that it contributed the least to rational understanding.
This intellectual disdain stands in stark contrast to the neurological reality. The olfactory system is unique among the senses in that it sends signals directly to the limbic system — the brain's emotional and memory centre — without first passing through the thalamus, the relay station that processes information from sight, hearing, and touch.
It is this neural shortcut that explains why a whiff of a particular perfume can transport someone decades into the past with an emotional vividness that no photograph could match. The cultural history of smell reveals just how profoundly attitudes have shifted over the centuries. In medieval and early modern Europe, odours were believed to carry disease — the so-called miasma theory — and elaborate aromatic defences were constructed accordingly.
Only with the germ theory of disease in the late nineteenth century did smell lose its perceived medical significance, and with it much of its cultural prestige. Yet outside the Western intellectual tradition, olfaction has often retained a far more elevated status. The Ongee people of the Andaman Islands, for instance, construct their entire cosmology around smell, greeting one another not with 'How are you?' but with a phrase that translates roughly as 'How is your nose?'
Such examples challenge the assumption that the marginalisation of smell in Western culture reflects a universal biological reality rather than a culturally specific prejudice. The commercial world, meanwhile, has long understood what philosophers chose to ignore. The fragrance industry — worth an estimated 50 billion dollars globally — represents merely the most visible manifestation of olfactory commerce.
Hotels, airlines, and retail chains now invest heavily in bespoke 'scent identities,' recognising that ambient odour influences everything from how long customers linger in a shop to how they rate the quality of a hotel room. Recent technological developments suggest that smell may be on the verge of a rehabilitation in scientific and medical contexts as well. Electronic noses — devices equipped with arrays of chemical sensors and machine-learning algorithms — can now detect certain cancers from breath samples with accuracy rates that rival conventional diagnostic methods.
If these technologies fulfil their promise, the sense that Kant dismissed as the least valuable may prove to be among the most diagnostically powerful tools in modern medicine.
