The result has been a race to the bottom in which sensationalism and outrage — emotions that hijack attention involuntarily — have become the dominant currencies of online discourse. Technology companies have responded to this competitive landscape by engineering their products to be as psychologically compelling as possible. Features such as infinite scrolling, autoplay, and variable-reward notification systems are not accidental design choices; they are deliberate applications of behavioural psychology.
Former employees of major technology firms have publicly described internal metrics that track not user satisfaction but 'time on device,' revealing a fundamental misalignment between corporate objectives and user wellbeing. The educational implications of this attentional crisis are particularly troubling. Research conducted across multiple countries suggests that the average attention span during lectures has not declined as dramatically as popular accounts claim, yet the *quality* of attention has measurably deteriorated.
Educators who once competed only with daydreaming and doodling now face an opponent — the smartphone — that has been engineered by some of the world's most talented designers to be maximally distracting. Some theorists have proposed radical solutions. The philosopher Matthew Crawford argues that attention should be treated as a commons — a shared resource that, like clean air or fisheries, requires collective governance to prevent its degradation.
Under such a framework, the design choices that deliberately fragment attention would be subject to the same kind of regulatory scrutiny currently applied to environmental pollutants. Whether or not such regulatory approaches gain traction, the underlying tension is unlikely to disappear. As artificial intelligence systems become more sophisticated in their ability to predict and manipulate human preferences, the competition for attention will only intensify.
