Every curatorial decision — which objects to display, whose stories to tell, which periods to celebrate — is inherently a political act. Rather than maintaining this pretence of impartiality, museums should openly embrace their potential as agents of social transformation. They should actively seek to represent marginalised voices, challenge colonial narratives embedded in their collections, and engage meaningfully with the pressing concerns of contemporary society. Free admission is not a luxury but a prerequisite for genuine democratic access; without it, museums remain the preserve of the affluent and the educated. Beyond their walls, museums should function as community hubs, forging partnerships with local organisations and providing spaces where diverse groups can gather, debate, and create. The measure of a museum's worth should not be the rarity of its holdings but the breadth and diversity of the communities it serves.

Running a museum in the modern era demands a pragmatic reconciliation of cultural ambition with financial reality. Blockbuster exhibitions, corporate sponsorship, and commercial ventures such as gift shops and hospitality are frequently derided by purists, yet they generate the revenue that sustains the quieter, deeper scholarly work that is the institution's lifeblood. The authentic object remains the museum's unique selling point — the irreplaceable experience of standing before a genuine artefact is what distinguishes a museum from a website or a textbook, and this must never be forgotten. Digital innovation should be welcomed as a means of enriching that encounter, not replacing it. Museums succeed when they attract the broadest possible audience without compromising the integrity of what they present, and this delicate equilibrium requires constant vigilance. Where museums should tread carefully, however, is in the territory of overt political commentary; their credibility rests on being perceived as trustworthy custodians of cultural heritage rather than participants in contemporary ideological disputes.
