(0) IN 1857 the Philological Society 1 London decided to produce a new and comprehensive dictionary of the English language. It took them 22 years to find a publisher, but eventually Oxford University Press agreed to take 2 the project.
James A. H. Murray 3 selected as the editor. More than 1,000 contributors across the world sent Murray and his team in Oxford examples of words 4 different contexts.
The project was supposed to take ten years. However, 5 five years, the editors had only reached 6 word 'ant'. Eventually, in 1884, the first part appeared, 7 in 1928 the tenth and last volume was published. Readers could look up the definitions and history of 400,000 words. However, as the English language is constantly evolving new words 8 had to be added ever since.
