Laughter is one of the most recognisable human behaviours, yet surprisingly little about it is well understood. We tend to think of it as a straightforward response to humour — someone tells a joke, we find it funny, and we laugh. But research over the past few decades has revealed that the relationship between laughter and amusement is far less direct than most people assume. Studies of everyday conversation show that the vast majority of laughter occurs not in response to deliberate jokes but during ordinary exchanges, often after remarks that are not remotely humorous. This suggests that laughter serves a primarily social function, one that has more to do with relationships than with comedy.
The neuroscientist Robert Provine, who spent years recording and analysing naturally occurring laughter, found that speakers laugh considerably more than their listeners and that laughter tends to occur at the ends of phrases rather than in the middle of them. These patterns indicate that laughter is not simply an involuntary reaction but a carefully placed signal, used to punctuate speech, to show agreement, and to manage the emotional tone of an interaction. It functions, in effect, as a form of social glue, binding groups together and easing potential tensions.
From an evolutionary perspective, laughter appears to predate language itself. Other primates produce laughter-like vocalisations during play, a behaviour that signals cooperative intent and helps maintain social bonds within a group. Some researchers believe that human laughter evolved from these earlier play signals and was gradually adapted for use in the more complex social environments that language made possible. If this theory is correct, then our tendency to laugh during conversation may be one of the oldest forms of communication we possess.
The physical effects of laughter have also attracted scientific interest. Genuine laughter activates the release of endorphins, the body's natural painkillers, producing a mild sense of euphoria and temporarily increasing pain tolerance. It reduces levels of cortisol and other stress hormones, promotes cardiovascular health, and strengthens the immune system. Some hospitals have experimented with laughter therapy programmes, though the evidence for their long-term clinical effectiveness remains limited.
Perhaps the most revealing aspect of laughter is how difficult it is to fake convincingly. Listeners are remarkably good at distinguishing spontaneous laughter from deliberate or posed laughter, even across cultures. Brain imaging studies show that hearing genuine laughter activates reward circuits in the listener's brain, while posed laughter produces a notably weaker response. This sensitivity suggests that we have evolved a finely tuned ability to detect sincerity in the laughter of others — an ability that would have been invaluable in navigating the complex social alliances of our ancestral past.
