Of all the human senses, smell is perhaps the most underestimated. We celebrate the visual arts, invest billions in audio technology, and have developed sophisticated vocabularies for describing taste and texture. Yet when it comes to smell, most people struggle to name more than a handful of odours, and the sense itself is frequently dismissed as primitive — a relic of our animal past that plays little role in modern life. This perception, however, is spectacularly wrong.
The human nose contains approximately four hundred different types of olfactory receptors, enabling us to distinguish over one trillion distinct scents — a figure that dwarfs the number of colours the eye can perceive or the tones the ear can detect. What we lack is not sensitivity but language. Unlike the Japanese, who have a rich vocabulary for describing smells, English speakers tend to resort to comparisons: something smells 'like roses' or 'like burning rubber.' The poverty of our language does not reflect the poverty of our perception; it merely obscures it.
What makes smell neurologically unique among the senses is its direct connection to the limbic system — the region of the brain responsible for emotion and memory. Visual and auditory information is processed through several relay stations before reaching the cortex, but olfactory signals take an almost direct route to the amygdala and hippocampus. This is why a particular scent can trigger an intensely vivid and emotional memory in a way that a photograph or a piece of music rarely can. The phenomenon, sometimes called the 'Proust effect' after the French novelist who famously described being transported to childhood by the smell of a madeleine cake, has been extensively documented by neuroscientists.
The commercial world has not been slow to exploit this knowledge. Retailers have long understood that ambient scent can influence consumer behaviour. Studies have shown that the presence of a pleasant smell in a shop increases the time customers spend browsing, their willingness to pay higher prices, and their likelihood of returning. Hotels, airlines, and car manufacturers now invest heavily in creating signature scents designed to evoke specific emotional associations — luxury, cleanliness, comfort, or excitement.
More recently, researchers have begun exploring the therapeutic potential of smell. Clinical trials have investigated whether exposure to certain odours can reduce anxiety, improve sleep quality, or slow cognitive decline in patients with early-stage dementia. The results are preliminary but promising, and some hospitals have already begun incorporating aromatherapy into their care programmes.
Perhaps the most important lesson from the science of smell is how much of our experience operates beneath the threshold of conscious awareness. We are constantly processing olfactory information — evaluating food, assessing environments, forming impressions of other people — without ever realising we are doing so. Far from being a vestigial sense, smell shapes our behaviour, our memories, and our emotions in ways that we are only beginning to understand.
