Maps are so deeply embedded in everyday life that we rarely pause to consider just how much they shape the way we understand the world. We use them to navigate unfamiliar cities, to follow the progress of storms, to visualise election results, and to settle arguments about the relative size of countries. Yet every map, no matter how objective it appears, involves a series of deliberate choices — about what to include, what to leave out, and how to represent three-dimensional reality on a flat surface — that inevitably influence the viewer's perception.
The most familiar example of this is the Mercator projection, developed in 1569 by the Flemish cartographer Gerardus Mercator. Designed primarily as a navigational tool for sailors, it preserves the angles between lines of latitude and longitude, making it invaluable for plotting courses across the ocean. However, it achieves this accuracy at the expense of distorting the relative size of landmasses. Countries near the poles appear vastly larger than they actually are, while those near the equator are compressed. The result is a world view in which Greenland looks roughly the same size as Africa, when in reality Africa is approximately fourteen times larger.
This distortion has consequences that extend well beyond geography. Critics have long argued that the Mercator projection reinforces a particular political and cultural perspective by visually inflating the significance of northern, predominantly wealthy nations at the expense of equatorial regions, many of which are in the developing world. Whether or not Mercator intended this effect is beside the point; the map has shaped generations of spatial understanding, and its influence persists even as digital tools have made alternative projections widely available.
In recent decades, the politics of cartography have attracted increasing academic attention. Scholars have examined how colonial powers used maps to assert territorial claims, how national borders drawn by distant administrators have fuelled lasting conflicts, and how the simple act of naming a place on a map can carry enormous symbolic weight. The decision to label a body of water the 'Sea of Japan' rather than the 'East Sea', for instance, remains a source of diplomatic tension between Japan and South Korea.
Digital mapping has introduced new dimensions to these debates. Satellite imagery and interactive platforms have democratised access to geographical information, enabling individuals to explore terrain, monitor deforestation, and even document human rights abuses. Yet these tools are not neutral either. The algorithms that determine which businesses appear on a digital map, which neighbourhoods are rendered in detail, and which regions remain blank all reflect the priorities and biases of the organisations that control them. The map, it turns out, has never been a mirror of reality — it has always been an argument about what matters.
