Of all the colours in the visible spectrum, blue occupies a uniquely puzzling position in human history. It is the colour of the sky and the sea, yet for most of recorded civilisation it was remarkably difficult to produce as a pigment, a dye, or even as a concept in language. Linguistic studies have revealed that many ancient languages had no dedicated word for blue, and some researchers believe this absence reflects not a difference in perception but a difference in cultural significance — blue simply did not matter enough to name.
The ancient Egyptians were a notable exception. They developed the first known synthetic pigment, Egyptian blue, around 2200 BCE by heating a mixture of limestone, sand, and copper-containing minerals. The resulting powder was vivid, stable, and highly prized, used to decorate tombs, temples, and royal objects. For centuries, Egypt was the sole source of a reliable blue pigment, and when the technique was eventually lost during the decline of the Roman Empire, Europe entered a period in which blue was extremely scarce and prohibitively expensive to produce.
The situation changed dramatically in the Middle Ages with the arrival of ultramarine, a pigment derived from the semi-precious stone lapis lazuli. Mined almost exclusively in what is now Afghanistan, lapis lazuli was transported along trade routes to European workshops, where it was ground and purified through an elaborate process. The resulting pigment was breathtakingly intense but extraordinarily costly — ounce for ounce, it was more expensive than gold. Its use in painting was reserved for the most sacred subjects, most notably the robes of the Virgin Mary, which cemented the association between blue and divinity that persists in Western art to this day.
The democratisation of blue began in 1704, when a Berlin dye-maker accidentally created Prussian blue, the first modern synthetic pigment. Affordable, versatile, and intensely coloured, Prussian blue rapidly replaced ultramarine for most practical purposes and made the colour accessible to ordinary people for the first time. A century later, French chemists synthesised artificial ultramarine, eliminating the dependence on lapis lazuli entirely. Blue, once the most exclusive of colours, had become commonplace.
Today, blue is consistently ranked as the world's favourite colour in surveys conducted across dozens of countries and cultures. It dominates corporate branding, national flags, and digital interfaces. Yet this ubiquity is itself a relatively recent phenomenon. The history of blue reminds us that our relationship with colour is shaped not only by optics and biology but by economics, technology, and cultural meaning. What we see when we look at the world is never purely a matter of physics — it is always, at least in part, a product of the societies that taught us how to look.
