In 1885, the German psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus published a groundbreaking study on human memory that would shape our understanding of how we learn for over a century. By memorising sequences of nonsense syllables — meaningless combinations of letters designed to eliminate prior associations — and then testing himself at various intervals, Ebbinghaus mapped out what he called the 'forgetting curve': a sharp, predictable decline in the ability to recall information over time.
His findings were striking. Within twenty minutes of learning something new, we have already lost roughly forty percent of what we absorbed. After one hour, more than half has vanished. By the end of a month, we retain barely twenty percent — unless we take deliberate steps to reinforce the material. The implications of this pattern are profound, particularly for anyone involved in education.
What makes the forgetting curve especially significant is not simply the speed of memory loss, but the fact that it can be counteracted through a technique known as spaced repetition. Rather than cramming information into a single intensive study session, learners who revisit material at gradually increasing intervals — after one day, then three days, then a week, then a month — retain dramatically more over the long term. Each review strengthens the neural pathways associated with the memory, making it progressively more resistant to decay.
Despite the overwhelming evidence supporting spaced repetition, the vast majority of educational institutions continue to rely on massed practice — the concentration of learning into a short, intense period, typically just before an examination. Students cram, pass their tests, and then promptly forget most of what they studied. The knowledge that was supposedly gained evaporates within weeks, rendering the entire exercise somewhat futile in terms of lasting understanding.
In recent years, technology has begun to offer solutions. Apps and digital platforms now use algorithms based on Ebbinghaus's research to schedule review sessions at optimal intervals, personalising the process for each individual learner. Language-learning platforms have been particularly quick to adopt this approach, and the results have been encouraging. Students using spaced repetition software consistently outperform those relying on traditional study methods in long-term retention tests.
Yet the broader educational establishment has been slow to embrace these findings. Curricula remain organised around blocks of content delivered in sequence, with assessment concentrated at fixed points. The structure of the academic calendar itself works against the principles of spaced repetition. Until schools and universities are willing to rethink not just what they teach but how and when they revisit it, the forgetting curve will continue to undermine much of the effort that goes into formal education.
