For much of the twentieth century, bilingualism was viewed with suspicion by educators and psychologists in English-speaking countries. The prevailing belief was that exposing children to two languages simultaneously would confuse them, slow their cognitive development, and leave them unable to master either language properly. Immigrant families were routinely advised to speak only English at home, even if it meant abandoning the language of their heritage. This advice, it turns out, was not only misguided but almost entirely the opposite of what research now tells us.
The shift in understanding began in the 1960s, when Canadian psychologists Elizabeth Peal and Wallace Lambert conducted a landmark study comparing bilingual and monolingual children in Montreal. Contrary to expectations, the bilingual children outperformed their peers on a range of cognitive tests, including measures of mental flexibility and abstract reasoning. The researchers proposed that the constant practice of managing two linguistic systems gave bilingual children a cognitive workout that sharpened their thinking more broadly.
Subsequent decades of research have largely confirmed and expanded upon these findings. Bilingual individuals have been shown to be better at filtering irrelevant information, switching between tasks, and resolving conflicting cues — skills that fall under the umbrella term 'executive function.' The underlying mechanism appears to be straightforward: because both languages are active in a bilingual person's brain at all times, the brain must constantly suppress one language while using the other. This ongoing process of inhibition and selection strengthens the neural circuits responsible for attention and cognitive control.
Perhaps the most compelling evidence for the bilingual advantage comes from research into ageing and dementia. Several large-scale studies have found that bilingual individuals tend to develop symptoms of Alzheimer's disease four to five years later than comparable monolinguals. Crucially, this delay occurs not because bilingualism prevents the physical deterioration of the brain — post-mortem examinations show similar levels of damage — but because the bilingual brain appears to have built up a greater 'cognitive reserve,' enabling it to compensate for the effects of the disease for longer.
It would be an oversimplification, however, to suggest that bilingualism is a universal cognitive enhancer. Some studies have failed to replicate the executive function advantages, and the size of the effect appears to depend heavily on factors such as the age at which the second language was acquired, the degree of proficiency, and how frequently both languages are used. Researchers caution against treating bilingualism as a simple prescription for better brain health.
Nevertheless, the trajectory of the evidence is clear. Speaking more than one language does not harm cognitive development — a claim that was asserted with great confidence for generations — and in many contexts it appears to confer measurable benefits. The question for policymakers is no longer whether bilingualism is desirable, but how to create educational environments in which it can flourish rather than be suppressed.
