US Prisons

Located on an island in San Francisco Bay, Alcatraz was one of the most famous high-security prisons in the U.S. before it closed in 1963. Often referred to as “The Rock”, it was known for its isolated location and the belief that escaping was impossible due to the cold, strong currents surrounding it. Alcatraz held some of the most dangerous criminals of its time, including Al Capone. Life there was tough, and inmates had few privileges. Today, it’s a popular tourist destination, with thousands visiting each year to see the old cells and hear stories of past escape attempts—some of which remain mysterious to this day.

Sing Sing is a maximum-security prison located in Ossining, New York. Opened in 1826, it has a long and complicated history. The name comes from a Native American tribe originally living in the area. Sing Sing was known for its strict routines and once had one of the most active execution chambers in the U.S. Over the years, it has gone through several reforms to improve the treatment of inmates and modernize its facilities. While the prison is still in use today, efforts are ongoing to change its image from a place of harsh punishment to one of rehabilitation and second chances.

ADX Florence, located in Colorado, is considered the most secure federal prison in the United States. It is often referred to as a 'supermax' facility, housing inmates who are considered too dangerous for regular prisons. Inmates spend around 23 hours a day alone in their cells and have minimal human contact. Known for housing terrorists, organized crime leaders, and spies, ADX Florence is designed to prevent escape entirely, with advanced security systems and heavily reinforced structures. Unlike older prisons, it was built specifically for solitary confinement and extreme isolation.

San Quentin is California’s oldest prison, located just north of San Francisco. Opened in 1852, it has been the site of the state’s only death row for male inmates. San Quentin is known not only for its tough past but also for recent rehabilitation programs, including art, education, and journalism projects that have received national attention. The prison has been featured in many films and documentaries due to its iconic look and proximity to Hollywood. Although it still houses dangerous criminals, San Quentin has become a symbol of both punishment and the potential for personal reform.
