To overcome this obstacle, manufacturers are currently designing a biodegradable outer shell that protects the inner, edible layer, though this unfortunately increases the overall production costs significantly.

Furthermore, the panels tend to lose efficiency quickly because dirt and vehicle rubber constantly block the sunlight, demanding intensive and costly regular maintenance to keep them fully functional.

Seeking a sustainable alternative to traditional electric streetlights, a French start-up is using living organisms to illuminate public spaces. By cultivating a specific type of bioluminescent marine bacteria in large transparent tubes, they can produce a soft, blue-green glow that requires absolutely no electricity. The bacteria are completely harmless and only require a simple nutrient mix to survive for several weeks at a time. The primary drawback so far is that the light generated is nowhere near as bright as conventional LED lamps, meaning it is currently only suitable for decorative purposes in parks or pedestrian walkways, rather than for illuminating busy highways where high visibility is crucial.

As the global population continues to rise, finding enough land to grow food has become a critical issue for modern agriculture. Vertical farming offers a solution by growing crops indoors in stacked layers, often within disused warehouses located directly in the center of bustling cities. This method uses significantly less water than traditional farming and completely eliminates the need for harmful chemical pesticides.
