The small public library in our village was never very popular. It was old, quiet, and most people preferred to read on their phones or tablets. Only a handful of elderly residents visited regularly. The librarian, Mrs Park, was starting to worry that the council would close it down.
One rainy afternoon, a thin grey cat walked through the open door and sat down on a chair near the children's section. She gave it some water and a little food, and the cat seemed happy to stay. Mrs Park decided to call it Dusty, because of the colour of its fur.
Over the next few days, something unexpected happened. People who had never visited the library before started coming in to see the cat. Parents brought their young children to read stories next to Dusty, and teenagers came to take photographs to share online.
The number of visitors doubled within a month. She created a small reading corner with cushions where Dusty liked to sleep, and people would sit there quietly with a book. The local newspaper even wrote an article about the library and its unusual attraction.
A year later, the library is busier than ever. The council has given it extra money for new books and equipment. It just needed a little help from a cat called Dusty.
